It is south of Boynton Beach and Gulf Stream. Delray Beach consists of approximately 16 square miles, of which 15 square miles are land and .5 are water. It was first settled in 1884 by people from the Panhandle of Florida. In 1894, Michigan Senator William S Linton started selling farm land. The area was called Linton after him. The farmers prospered once Henry Flagler extended the railroad from West Palm Beach to Miami. There was a station at Linton. In 1901, the name was changed to Delray, after a Detroit neighborhood. It was incorporated in 1911. In that year, pineapple and tomato canning plants were built. Pineapple was the primary crop in the area.

In the 1930s and 1940s, it became a winter haven for artists and authors. It continues to be a popular seasonal destination today. Atlantic Avenue is known for its restaurants, galleries and shops. It is also well know for jazz festivals and parades. Popular attractions include Old School Square, Artist Alley, the Cornell Art Museum, the Crest Theatre, Delray Beach Playhouse and the Spady Cultural Heritage Museum.
