Learn About Lantana
Call (561) 322-3330 to speak to a Lantana realtor and specialist now. Lantana is located in Palm Beach county. It is north of Hypoluxo Road and mostly east of I95. It south of Lake Worth and runs along the intercoastal waterway. A small portion of it extends out to the Atlantic Ocean. It consists of 2.9 square miles, of which 2.3 square miles are land and .6 are water. It was named after the abundance of wild Lantana plants growing in abundance in the area. It was incorporated in 1921. At the time of incorporation, it was only 1 square mile with about 100 residents. It is a nice place to visit and a great place to live.
It was settled after the Seminole Wars. MB Lyman brought his family here in 1988 and immediately opened a general store, post office and Indian Trading Post. He later opened the Lantana Fish Company and in the early 1900’s gathering and selling oysters was the area’s leading industry. There was significant growth in the area after World War II, as in most of south Florida. The city was home to the AG Holley Hospital, also known as Southeast Florida Tuberculosis Hospital, from 1950-2012. It housed hundreds of tuberculosis patients through those years. The city continued to grow when I95 was built through it in the mid 1970’s.
From 1974-1978, the city housed the largest decorated Christmas Tree in the world. The trees were brought in from the Pacific Northwest to the headquarters of The National Enquirer, the supermarket tabloid still popular today. It was a favored local holiday event and big tourist attraction which ended with the sale of the National Enquirer after its founder, Generoso Pope Jr, died in 1988.
